ABOUT CARITAS - GULU ARCHDIOCESE

Background

Background of Caritas Gulu Archdiocese

CARITAS Gulu is the Emergency Relief and Development arm of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Gulu. It is a commission with a pastoral obligation to offer charity and hope to the most disadvantaged members of society. CARITAS Gulu Archdiocese has branch offices in Kitgum, Gulu and Pader Districts; but also intervenes in the new districts of Amuru, Nwoya, Lamwo and Agago. CARITAS has been in operation for over 20 years since its founding as the Social Services and Economic Department of the diocese.

Through the Church network and structures CARITAS has well developed community networks and systems to implement its projects. The organization which has become one of the largest local charities in the region owes its strength to the personality of its head, his grace, the Archbishop of Gulu, and the team of dedicated staff all working within a well developed programme implementation structure.

CARITAS Gulu Archdiocese continue to deliver of social services; response to emergency relief and rehabilitation programs; and working on development and livelihood activities, the organization will also begin to look more closely at other issues, for example those related to the significant growth in population and the consequent challenges in education, health, employment, dependency and the recognition that the youth are quickly becoming the resources, decision makers, parents and leaders of the next generation. The need for communities to include the youth and children in their planning and capacity development and their need to become self-governing must be complementary. It will also look at issues related to climate change and sustainability.

While preparing a framework for on-going flexibility, the main strategic goals are:

  1. To empower the community in northern Uganda to address their social and psychological needs in an integral and sustainable manner.
  2. To effectively respond to the emergency needs of the vulnerable persons and community in northern Uganda.
  3. To contribute towards improved livelihood and development in the Acholi sub region.
  4. To strengthen the capacity of CARITAS Gulu Archdiocese and its relevant structures to respond effectively to its mandate.
